Details: 

Bhumibol dam (Figure 1f) is a largest and multipurpose dam in Thailand. It is a concrete arch dam on Ping river, part of Chao Phraya river with 54 m high, 486 m long, and 6 m wide. The capacity is 13462 million cubic meters. The project covered and construction of a dam later and named “Bhumibol” by the royal permission. Bhumibol dam located at Khao Kaew, Sam Ngao dsitric, Tak Province. It has 4 functions: protect city through maintain Cho Phraya river, water supply, reservoir has served as a fish breeding ground, and generate electricity by hydro power plant.

The Bhumibol Hydro Power Plant contributes 5% of electricity in Thailand. It has total capacity of 779,200 kW. It consisting of 8 generating units: 6 generating units of 82,200kW, 1 unit of 115 kW, and 171,000 kW. The Lower Mae Ping Dam is 8 m high, 300 m long and has a storage capacity of 5,000,000 m3. In off-peak hours, the one pump-turbine returns water back into the Bhumibol (upper) reservoir and when demand is high, the pump serves as a generator for power production.

They maintain turbine and generator 25 days in 3 years. The operation in Bhumibol Hydro Power Plant monitoring and control by EGAT with SCADA.

Impression:

The function of Bhumibol Dam not only generate electricity, but also important to environment (control the water in Chao Phraya, reserves for fish breed) and local economic (water supply for agriculture).

Conclusion: 

The Bhumibol Hydro Power Plant generates electricity use hydropower from Bhumibol Dam. Water will through the turbine and produce electricity. When they have exceeded electricity, it be use for pumped back the water from lower reservoir to upper reservoir. Bhumibol dam has 4 main functions: generate electricity, protect the city by control level on Ping River, reserves for fish breed, and water supply.
